| To
most people, mystery movies have either silly deus ex machina or obvious
I-Never-Doubted-For-An-Instant endings. But the Spanish Prisoner
is not a normal mystery movie. It is a suspenseful one that –for once-
supplies you with enough evidence to be able to solve the mystery without
giving anything away.
I can’t tell you much about this movie before ruining its intricate and impelling plot. To give you an idea, though, I'll let you in on the setup. The beginning of the movie introduces Joe Ross, a mathematician who is finishing up an equation that when used, can beat any market in the world. Examining his circumstances, however, Joe begins to doubt that he will ever see any money come from his hard work. He doesn’t know whether he can trust the people around him and it soon becomes obvious that someone is trying to play him. Not only is this movie entertaining, it can also be visually beautiful at times, spattered with world war two-era art deco and ideas. It’s nicely scripted, well acted and intelligent, and although you keep telling the main character “Don’t do that” you can forgive him, as you would do the same thing in his place. For me, the Spanish Prisoner was a joy to watch and an interesting puzzle to try and solve. I saw the Spanish Prisoner with my older sister. We both enjoyed it, although my sister thought it was a little slow. So here’s warning to those of you with short attention spans: if you’ve got ants in your pants, this isn’t the best movie for you. But if you’ve got a keen and critical eye, go down to your video store and rent The Spanish Prisoner. |
